Going round in Circle

November 2, 2007 11:00 pm

Went to tried out a lot of other OS and at the end realising what I have is already is the best (for me). I now have 3 OS installed, i.e. Ubuntu, OpenSUSE and Windows. The Gnome 2 in OpenSUSE 10.3 kind of worked but I still prefer Ubuntu 7.04 which is what I had been using. I believe the main problem for me is the different resolution for the laptop screen and the external screen, just couldn’t get the Gnome 2 to display correctly. Anyway tried out Debian, FreeBSD, PC-BSD, DesktopBSD but none of them works with my laptop, either problems with the graphics card or the wireless card. So enough time wasted (well not really wasted since there is something to learn in everything), back to original Ubuntu 7.04 and I am happy :). Always have to go the long way, always have to learn from mistakes…

These two days, got to spent some time with my mum. Walked around Bracknell and Martins Heron, found some nice parks around my house, had breakfast in the garden and shop for baby clothes which I really enjoyed :D. I always know that I don’t want much from the world and prefer a “simple” life. I know that I’ve gone round and round for many times already, endless searching, time to stop going round in circle. Now that I believe I’ve found it, I just need to do it before it’s too late!

Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty

November 1, 2007 7:13 pm

For some reason I didn’t keep up to date this time, I only found out about the new Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty release being told by a friend. I think my demand for my home PC is dropping, mainly using it for surfing the internet really! Surprisingly the new release doesn’t work for me!

So no luck for me with Ubuntu this time because firstly the upgrade manager (7.04 to 7.10) wouldn’t work… so I did a fresh install (keeping my /home directory). After that everything seems to work but it wouldn’t display correctly on the external montior (Xerox XA7), I tried almost all the settings I can think of including manually editing the xorg.conf and using the auto-config tools, just wouldn’t go above 800×600! Imagine a 19″ monitor on 800×600 resolution! I can stand a lot of the features not working, but working on a proper resolution is one of the min. requirements.

As much as I like Ubuntu, I have decided that I will try something different, may be something very simple, something very fast and stable, doesn’t have to look good but run very fast on my laptop (Toshiba Tecra-S1), and of course supporting 1280×1024. Decided to try out FreeBSD and may be with gnome 2 since the main upgrade in Ubuntu 7.10 is the support of the new gnome, but I know that it’s very possible that it’s gnome 2 which is not compatible with my monitor and or my ATI graphics card! Will see how that goes, but conclusion is, simple is good…

On a side note, about simplicity, I have come to like a very old text editor (VI) very much. It must be one of the oldest text editor that comes with Linux, it’s great because it’s so simple, don’t even need the mouse to operate it, your hand can stand on the keyboard all the time while performing search, replace, etc… There are Windows version (e.g. VIM) which people have developed. Also I’m using a web browser called Epiphany is great too, very simple and fast, but less feature as compare to FireFox. Something that’s worth trying out.

Graduation & Impermanence

October 25, 2007 11:14 pm

Initially I thought this is going to be a long post, but after a while, there isn’t much I need to say… Starting to see that it’s better to say less in most situations but some time a bit of talking is necessary and good when done right. Therefore I try to write a little here.

However what I write here is relative anyway and likely that you will see it differently to me, graduation wasn’t particularly exciting really, but appreciate that it provides an opportunity for many to meet. It takes a lot of yuen (緣) for all of us to meet, to be in the same college, studying in same course, living in the same house. It’s up to us what we want to do with the 因緣 that bring us all together, why not make the best out of it. It’s not easy to live together, from strangers to housemates, some are thinking of living in the house that I’m currently living in, the thing I treasure is the time I get to spent with them.

This remains me of the talk given my Ajahn Brahm, I can’t remember exactly but on the line of describing Karma is like the ingredients of a cake. That we all have different ingredients (e.g. health, wealth, looks, etc) However what makes a good cake depends mainly on the cook, you can still bake a good cake with poor ingredients, but good ingredients doesn’t guarantee a good cake!

People will go, things will change, that’s the nature which is impermanence (無常). Happy things will happy and relatively unhappy moments will come, because we see things relatively (at least I still do, for me, it’s best to 放下萬緣,一心念佛). In a few years time, or even a weeks time, things that is happening right now becomes very small. Rare it is to know a group of friends as close as QuGee, easy it is to form, difficult it is to maintain. Much work need to be done, much to practise and much to learn, something to remain myself and to share:

但念無常,慎勿放逸!

過緩過急同是病,強想一心心愈亂,志堅如鋼氣如綿,不間不雜自成片。

Heart Shrine Relic Tour - Maitreya Project

October 14, 2007 11:00 pm

I feel very fortunate to get to view the the Relics / Ringsel / Sarira (舍利) at Jamyang Buddhist Centre today. A quote from the Jamyang’s website:

A precious collection of sacred relics of the Buddha and many other Buddhist masters is currently touring the world.

I almost didn’t go today but thanks a friend I decided to go at the end. Today is also the last day of the public viewing in London as well. The next public viewing will be at Birmingham, view the relic tour calendar for details. This relic tour is part of the Maitreya Project

At the conclusion of the Maitreya Project Heart Shrine Relic Tour, the relics will be enshrined in a 500-ft/152-m bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha which is being built in Kushinagar, northern India.

See the collection of relics.

與緬甸抗議民眾站在同一陣線

September 27, 2007 7:33 pm

I’m sure most of us have heard this news already, sometimes we may wonder there are so many things that are out of our country and is there anything we can do about it? I do believe the mind is strong, with enough people with the same aim, we can make a different! Here is a quote from a Petition to support the Burmese Protesters.

Bracknell

August 23, 2007 8:06 pm

I have now been in Bracknell for almost a month now, it’s very different to London, more like Taunton where I used to live. I would describe the life as simple, enjoying work and no pressure at the moment. Some photos of Bracknell and where I live:
