地藏比丘其人其事 - 摘錄自《佛法概要》
地藏（西元630──729年），生於新羅國王族，俗姓金，號喬覺。生而相貌奇特，頂骨聳出特高。臂力甚大，可敵十人。為人心地慈善，穎悟異常，嘗自誨曰：‘六籍寰中，三清術內，唯第一義，與方寸合。’唐高宗永徽四年（西元653年），喬覺時年二十四歲，出家剃發為僧，唐代的中國佛教，如日麗中天，吸引了一些日本、新羅、高麗、百濟等國的僧人來華求法。地藏出家後，即攜白犬善聽航海來華。至安徽省池州府青陽縣九華山。見山峰狀如蓮花、峰巒聳秀，山川幽奇，便登高覽勝，嘆為稀有。遂於此山深無人處，擇一盆地，棲居巖洞。渴飲澗水，飢食白土（此土白而膩細，俗稱觀音土）。常被毒虫傷螫，亦端坐無念，置之泰然。地藏素願寫四大部經，遂下山，至南陵，俞盪等人寫獻，得以歸山。至德年初。地方紳士諸葛節率村人登山，見深無人跡處，有一和尚，坐禪於洞穴內。洞旁有一破鍋，存在殘粒和著白土，生活異常清苦，大為驚異。詢知此乃新羅王子，遠來求法。諸葛節等人，深愧未盡地主之誼，遂發心倡議為地藏比丘建造禪宇。時九華山地為閔讓和所有，建寺須請其施舍山地。閔公堅信佛教，素懷慈念，樂善好施。每齋僧百名，必虛一位，請洞僧地藏比丘，以足其數。聞知諸葛節等人要在此建造寺院，自然十分歡喜，樂意捐助山地。閔公對地藏說：‘九子山頭的土地，盡為我有，任意所需。’地藏答曰：‘一袈裟地足矣。’閔公許之。地藏遂將袈裟一展，遍覆九子山峰。閔公見狀甚喜，盡將所蔭之地施與地藏建大道場。並遣其子出家，法名道明。後來閔公亦舍俗離塵，禮其子道明為師。現今所見地藏菩薩像，左道明，右閔公。寺院建成後，各方學者雲集此山，特別新羅國的僧人，來此日多。因國內外僧眾咸集於此，生活即發生困難。地藏於山中掘石得土，其色青白，細如面粉，供眾食用。寺中僧人為求法而來，雖然一些人餓得皮骨相連，被人稱為‘枯稿眾。’但是他們在地藏的領導下，團結、精進，一心向道，以苦為樂。後新羅國王得知地藏在九華山開辦道場，即派人運糧供養。地藏於開元十六年（西元729年）七月三十日夜成道，時年九十九歲。旋即召眾告別，罔知攸往。但聞山鳴石隕，扣鐘嘶啞，跏趺而滅。其屍坐於函中，三年開將入塔，顏貌如生。舉起則動骨節，若撼金鎖。乃立小浮圖於南台，此即地藏生前宴坐之地。這就是九華山建寺之因緣。由斯九華山與普陀山、五台山、峨嵋山齊名，並稱為中國佛教四大名山，是全國佛教徒朝拜的聖地。地藏比丘被人們認為是地藏菩薩的化身，每年七月三十日，九華山香火鼎盛，深為民眾所信仰。
地藏菩薩有誓願:「 眾生度盡方證菩提，地獄未空誓不成佛。」
