Career & Updates
November 26, 2006 12:56 pmIt has been a while since the last post, have been quite busy with many things especially looking for job. As most will agree that it’s difficult to find a company that like me and I like them, and also not only concentrate on earning money alone. Sounds like a difficult job to find, will keep trying and see what comes.
My Computer – Also spent sometime exploring Linux, tried to swap the two hard disk I have been at the end decided will stick with the old one since both of them are 5400rpm. Finally decided to upgrade from 512MB -> 1024MB ram as the demand from the programs are just too much. It’s a lot faster after the upgrade, well I should say being able to open much more program without worrying that I have to close some of them first. Very happy with the computer and hope it will last for 1/2 more years. Then find out that the graphics card has not been properly set up hence a bit slow when loading google spreadsheet. It was on AGP 1x and with some help online, managed to fix it. After that I tried to fix the boot loader(splash) where the resolution is wrong but after adding some line (vga=791) to the menu.lst under grub it can’t boot into Xserver…
QuGee – The QuGee website has also undergo many changes this week. Thanks to Jac we now have a new logo and the layout & theme of the forum has been improved. Now everything is looking nicer and easier to navigate. Everyone has many updates this week too, e.g. Kamil took some nice photos and Terry come up with something funny.
Time flies, have to use it well.

Pure Land Chanting Session
November 20, 2006 1:21 pmGet to try out a group chanting session at ULU yesterday organized by ULUBUDA. With members from ULUBUDA, ICBS and support from AMTB UK members, it was quite successful. We had a 2 hours session where we recite "Namo Amituofo" in walking meditation. It is important to understand what Buddhism teaches and also practicing it. The session was very simple and everyone was very happy and we all have a relaxing and refreshing time, it was good to take some time out from our very busy life. Looking forward to the next session which will be in 2 weeks time, for more details, look out on the ULUBUDA website or the AMTB UK website.

An Inconvenient Truth
November 7, 2006 9:45 pmJust watched the film "An Inconvenient Truth" yesterday, I strongly recommend this film as it bring awareness to the world. It is a documentary on the Earth's climate crisis. While you watch it, remember not to fall to the extremes and jump to the conclusion too early. Do your research and decide what you believe is true and do what you believe is right.
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. ~ Buddha
From my point of view, we mankind must do something and no question that we are doing a lot more harm to the environment nowadays then few hundred years ago. Some people do question the data/graphs he presents but that's up to you to decide. Enjoy!

Missing SWAP with Ubuntu 6.10
7:23 pmToday I just realized that my comp is getting very slow when the ram usage is above 80%. As I remember before the upgrade to 6.10, it was able to manage/perform much better than that. So I found that that swap partition is actually missing and so I look in the Ubuntu forum to see if I can found anything. Seems that I'm not the only one, but I guess I can't complain as I have two swap partitions. Anyway this is the solution if you have the same problem.
List your partitions
- Disk admin does not come with 6.10, can use this to list your partitions.
sudo fdisk -l
Mount your swap partition
- dev/hda8 is mine swap partition, likely to be different for you.
sudo mkswap /dev/hda8
swapon -a
If these doesn't work, try:
sudo swapon /dev/hda8
That's it, good luck. view source

Websites & my Computer
November 4, 2006 1:41 pmWebsites – Have been spending some time on Terry's website which is mainly going to be on File sharing. The idea is that he wants to share his Physic's notes with others. This is because at Imperial College Physics Department, they don't give out notes therefore everything is handwritten so he wanted to upload his notes and share with others. At the end we decided to go for a software call PHPfileNavigator, it took some time to set up but it's a very nice software. It is designed to be a file manager but with some tweaking it can be for file sharing as well. I might install one as well because of the features it supports, I also change my home page vinlai.com to a very simple design. Basically it's just a logo with a few links, have a look and tell me what you think.
My Comp - Just upgrade to Ubuntu 6.10 yesterday, the upgrade process is very easy and straight forward. All I really need to do is click the upgrade button, took about an hour to download and upgrade the system. Just have to update some installed 3rd party softwares and everything works. So thanks to Ubuntu for their hard work.
Other than that also got MatLab working so I can now start on my FYP. Can't ask for more and I'm really happy with my computer, really don't think I need a new one any time soon. Let's see how long this computer can last as it's 3 years warranty just expired this summer. My flat mates are also planning to bring their old laptops back so may be next term we can have some servers running in QG
.
Photos - Couldn't get Bluetooth to work at the end by manage to get the photos from my phone with the cable on another computer. So uploaded some photos for the visit to Amaravati Buddhist Monastery.
Click on the photos to view the album
