Cold Callers! SPAM Numbers!
October 31, 2006 11:42 pmIf you are reading this post, you probably have just received a call from one of the numbers listed below and wanting to find out who called before calling them back. If that’s the case, I suggest you don’t call the number back. I just receive a call from 01554741237 and guess what, it’s one of those call that ask you if you want to upgrade the phone with them or “we have on our record that you have just upgraded your phone, can you tell us who you upgrade it with?”. Another very common number is 02920368701, a lot of people seems to be getting a call from them.
How to response is up to you! But I would suggest that you don’t go for their plan, from my experience I get the cheapest package from staying with the current provider. And you don’t have to worry about the cheaque back which is likely you will not get in most cases depends which company you bought it from. Hence I have complied a list of numbers that people considered to be spam numbers:

I hope this list don’t keep growing and hope these people will find a better job. If you are unlucky enough to get a call from these cold callers, I hope you think carefully before paying them any money or give them any of your details. If you have a number to add to the list, feel free to leave a comment. I would like to thanks Blog-Ed which is the site where I get most of these numbers from. Thank you.

Kathina Ceremony - Amaravati
October 29, 2006 10:02 amToday I went to Amaravati Buddhist Monastery to attend the Kathina Ceremony. It’s quite an experience, the monks there lives a very simple life and it reminds me of what I really need in life. The temple is very nice and I would recommend you to go. Their retreats are very propular, they have long retreats and some shorter one (weekend) which would be a good start on finding out more about Buddhism and the temple. Have a look at their website if you have time:
I took some photos, but haven’t got my k800i working with my computer. Will upload some photos when I get it working. Also I was reading a a book that I got from AMTB UK on Pure-Land Zen, Zen Pure-Land, it’s a book on Letters from Patriarch Yin Kuang. It’s a very good book and I’m enjoying it. I read the Chinese version before and I was very happy to find the English version. Have a look at this page for a question and answer that I quoted from this book on:
Will be quoting more from the book later :).

It has been a week of no Windows with my Toshiba Terca-S1 and so far it's very good experenice. OK, except!
- Haven't got a driver for my k800i to download the files (might have to use Bluetooth)
- Ocassionly have problem with Skype (it can crash sometimes)
- Need MatLab for FYP!
That's the three main things I need to sort out, other than that enjoying it. Some of the programs that I'm using to replace the one in Windows are:
- TexMaker <- WinEdit
- Gaim <- GoogleTalk and MSN messenger
- GIMP <- Photoshop
- OpenOffice <- MS Office
- gFTP <- fileZilla
- D4X <- FlashGet
I think that's about it, by the way if you happen to have a mouse with more than 3 buttons you might have to manually map the buttons. Because that's what I had to do, also the support for Ubuntu online are very helpful! When I experience a problem, it's very likely that someone else had the same before and can be solved. So thanks to the people to develop Linux, Ubuntu and all the open source software.

Linux - Ubuntu on Toshiba Tecra S1
October 23, 2006 2:36 pmNo more Windows for me!
After Terry decided to try out Linux, I have decided to start using it more this weekend. My computer is Toshiba Terca-S1, Centrino 1.5M version with 1.2G RAM, always have Linux installed but didn't use it that much. From dual booting windows and Linux. By the end of the weekend, I have decided to completly get rid of windows. Quite a risky move I have to say, but anyway now I have formatted windows and now I only have Linux running on my laptop. So far I have managed to installed everything I want on it and quite happy with the result. Everything run a lot faster (with my old laptop)! Don't think I need to get a new laptop any more, save a lot of money! Let's see how it goes :D.
FYI: the version I'm using is Ubuntu and it's very well supported. I would recommend this if you also want to try out Linux. Dapper is a very good addon too.

Converting Word to PDF
October 18, 2006 6:54 pmNow a days a lot of the documents online are in PDF format. A lot of the text editors support outputing/converting to pdf. However many people are still using MS Word and it does not have a built in pdf converter.
IC has be using a pdf converter called primoPDF which I found out today is free. It’s a free pdf converter for any printable file type (including word), basically it works by printing to your doc to the primoPDF. So your document will look excatly the same as the printed version. If you are looking for a Free Word > PDF converter, you probably would find this useful. Visit PrimoPDF homepage for more details.

9dBi Wireless Antenna!
October 17, 2006 11:45 amNot something you will need to do everyday, but after moving house we couldn't find our antenna so we search for one on eBay and this is what we got!
We didn't expect it to be so big but now everyone in the house can receive good signal which is good! So what does 9dBi means? Here is a quote that I found from AdaletWirless:
The units of antenna gain are usually expressed in dBi. The ‘i’ stands for isotropic, an ideal antenna with a spherical radiation pattern. Like anything “ideal”, the isotropic antenna does notexist in the practical world. The correct units for a dipole antenna would be dBd (‘d’ for dipole), butwe still often see dBi used for any kind of antenna gain.
It would be useful to get one if you need a more powerful antenna for your house :).
